The two security personnel escorted me across the property, directly toward the tower at its center. Neither of them spoke, but the fact that they were in such a hurry and hadnât just told me to leave suggested that there was more to unpack here.
When we reached the tower, they had me follow them to the unmarked door, which beeped at their approach.
âFollow us,â the woman said as though I hadnât been doing so this whole time, and soon I was standing in a large security office. Several desks with computers faced a massive bank of screens that had more displays than even Libbyâs control room. Off to the sides were some offices and what appeared to be interrogation rooms.
There were a lot of people in the room, and all of them appeared to be working. Two were chatting about a high-stakes game where one of the players seemed to be cheating, another was talking about two girls who were on the verge of becoming too drunk, and still others were watching somebody who they thought might be a pickpocket out on the beach.
Though they wanted everything in the resorts to feel relaxed, seeing this made me realize just how much work that took. For as many people as there were trying to unwind, there were just as many trying to grift.
A Silthar approached. I had only ever seen one of their species before in my life. They tended to keep to their own Sector, and from what it sounded like, to their own small cluster of planets. They didnât want to be involved in universal politics and werenât one of the species that were interested in being a part of the greater society. I knew there were a lot of species like that and that there were many, many that I didnât even know, but it was always interesting to be reminded of how wide a universe it really was.
The Siltharâs lower half slithered across the carpeted floor, and he wore a suit jacket at the top with a name tag like everyone else in the facility. The sleeves were shortened to accommodate the small pincer arms at the top of his body, and a little metal box hung at the side of his serpentine head, attached to one of the bone spines that protruded from the back of his skull, and went down along his back.
A light at the top of the box flashed when he spoke. âYou wish to with one of my staff speak, why?â
I knew what he was saying in spite of the order of the words. âIâm here to speak to this man,â I said, holding up the picture. âAs part of an investigation.â
âWhat an into investigation?â he asked, and I stared at him a moment.
Thankfully, Ned filled me in. âThe Siltharâs language is far more fluid than our own. When they communicate with one another, the order in which the words come out is not important, so when they communicate in our language, they struggle to order the words properly.
